It was very nice to see the sunshine out in full force today after a week of much fog and rain. After work I dressed up warm – the autumn air is getting very chilly! – and went for a walk. I took this photo on a walking trail not far from my home in St. John’s, Newfoundland. This small pond is a temporary calm point in the Virgina River where the water slows to a crawl before flowing under the bridge and swiftly downstream again.

There are only a few colours of autumn left showing in the trees this year, the weather has stripped most of the leaves from the trees. The colours in the sky as the sun set this evening however more than made up the difference.

I’m only just getting to finish sorting through the photos I took this past Saturday at Lake Del Valle. Here are three more scenic shots I took on my hike around the lake. The first shot is a HDR composite of three images, the others are regular photographs. I used HDR on the first photo to capture the detail in shadow on the tree branch that would have otherwise been lost.

It was a hot day for hiking, around 90 degrees but the trails were level and easy so it was actually quite enjoyable. I believe the hike took about 4 hours total, though a considerable portion of that time was spent looking through the camera lens!

This beautiful landscape photograph was taken during a trip to Gros Morne National Park on the northern peninsula of Newfoundland, Canada in 2002. The photo is of Western Brook Pond, a glacier-carved land-locked fjord set in the Long Range Mountains which is the northern extent of the Appalachian Mountains. The lake itself is approx 16km (9.9mi) at its widest point and about 540ft deep. Much of the lake is surrounded by steep rock cliffs up to 2000 ft high and most of the year waterfalls cascade over the rock faces at various points.

This photo has proven to be quite popular over time. As it has always been a personal favourite, I’ve had it posted on my various personal websites for many years, and during that time numerous individuals have contacted me about using the photo for publication and other purposes. Among other things, in the past several years the photo has been requested for publication in a children’s book about Canada’s natural wonders, and requested for publication in a geography textbook for Canadian high school students. It was also chosen by CBC for publication in a project on Gros Morne National Park, and featured in the August 2006 publication of “Downhome” magazine, as shown below.
