Sand and Surf, Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA

I’ve admittedly been slow to post photos this week despite having many great photos from my trip down California Highway 1 over the Labour Day weekend. Mostly I’ve been busy with work and other things but honestly it’s also partially due to the fact I took so many photos – it takes a significant amount of time to sort through all the photos, pick out the “best” ones, tweak them and upload them.

Some of my favourite photos from this past weekend were also the most overwhelming to deal with. On the way down the coast, we stopped at a beautiful sandy beach in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. It was a beautiful sunny day and there was quite a bit of surf, making for dramatic and beautiful waves. In fact, after sorting through this collection of photos multiple times and being extremely liberal with deleting “all but the best”, I still had too many photos left to choose only 1 or 2 to post. So, instead I picked a collection of them and uploaded them to view as a set.

Take a look at the entire collection. You can click on either of the photos above to view the set, or I recommend viewing the slideshow to see all the images at fullsize.

Bixby Creek Bridge, Big Sur, California

Another beautiful scenic shot from my weekend trip down coastal Highway 1 in Northern California. This photo was taken of the coastline at Bixby Creek Bridge, near Big Sur 120 miles south of San Francisco. According to Wikipedia, the bridge is 714 feet long, 280 feet high and was built in 1932. It is supposed to be “one of the most photographed features on the West Coast” due to the beautiful coastal scenery shown here and its central location on the California coastal highway.

Big Sur Coastline, California Highway 1

For the Labour Day weekend, I drove down California Highway 1 from Monterey to Pismo Beach. The above photo was taken along the Big Sur coast, just south of Carmel-By-The-Sea, California. I’m still out (writing this from a hotel) so I’ll have more photos to post this coming week once I get home and have more time to sort through my photos.

Coastal Sunset Landscape, Highway 1

2756350378 9edbe409e6 Coastal Sunset Landscape, Highway 1

This is another photo taken on my trip from Santa Cruz to San Francisco via the California coastal Highway 1 this past weekend. I captured this photo immediately after sunset, while the sky was still colored with lovely pastels and the light on the land was still very soft. There was also a light fog along the coast, creating a very nice misty effect in the distance.

This is also my first attempt at creating a HDR image. For those not familar with the technique, HDR stands for high dynamic range, and is the process of taking multiple photos of the same scene at different exposure levels and combining them to create a single image with better overall lighting and exposure than any single picture alone. Familiar with shooting photos and getting the sky perfect but the landscape (foreground) too dark, or vice versa? This is where HDR can help. You take multiple photos, one or more exposed for the sky, and one or more exposed for the landscape and combine them using HDR software to create a well-balanced image. The effect can easily be overdone, creating an unnatural or almost cartoon-like effect. I tried hard to avoid that here, please leave a comment and let me know whether you like the result or not.
