Bauline is a small fishing community of about 400 people on Conception Bay, Newfoundland. It’s located about a 30 minute drive from St. John’s. I visited Bauline in September and was lucky enough to come upon this marina just as the sun was setting over Conception Bay. The seagulls overhead seemed to be enjoying the crisp autumn air as much as I was!

These giant redwood trees tower hundreds of feet overhead at the John Muir Woods National Monument and nearly block out all light on the forest floor below…

If you head up Marine Drive in Golden Gate Park, past Crissy field and Fort Mason, you’ll find this beautiful spot with a fantastic view of the Golden Gate Bridge…

Seaport Village, a charming tourist area on the San Diego waterfront with many shops, restaurants, etc for visitors as well as a large park with beautiful flowers…

I captured this photo of a lovely pink flower in Balboa Park in San Diego earlier this week. I really like the lighting in this photo and the depth of field with the other flower behind it.
I’m not sure what type of flower it is, if anyone recognizes it, please leave a comment and let [...]

This weekend my wife and I are taking a short “mini-break” or vacation to San Diego to celebrate both of our birthdays. These photos were taken walking along the waterfront piers on Saturday afternoon. There was a Carnival cruise ship in port this day, and the area was filled with excited cruise-goers heading to the [...]

I’ve admittedly been slow to post photos this week despite having many great photos from my trip down California Highway 1 over the Labour Day weekend. Mostly I’ve been busy with work and other things but honestly it’s also partially due to the fact I took so many photos – it takes a significant amount [...]

Another beautiful scenic shot from my weekend trip down coastal Highway 1 in Northern California. This photo was taken of the coastline at Bixby Creek Bridge, near Big Sur 120 miles south of San Francisco. According to Wikipedia, the bridge is 714 feet long, 280 feet high and was built in 1932. It is supposed [...]

August 2008

For the Labour Day weekend, I drove down California Highway 1 from Monterey to Pismo Beach. The above photo was taken along the Big Sur coast, just south of Carmel-By-The-Sea, California. I’m still out (writing this from a hotel) so I’ll have more photos to post this coming week once I get home and have [...]

Here’s a lovely photo I took of the Golden Gate Bridge in late June of this summer. The beautiful colors in this photo show just how pleasant a warm summer afternoon can be in San Francisco. During much of the year it’s not uncommon to see the bridge enveloped in fog, even when the city [...]

On Saturday I had the fantastic opportunity of participating in Scott Kelby’s Worldwide PhotoWalk. PhotoWalks were planned in cities all around the world, whereby groups of photographers got together for 2-3 hours and walked pre-planned routes, taking pictures as they went. If you ever have the opportunity to participate in (or plan!) such an event, [...]

The structure was built to defend San Francisco from an attack by sea during World War II but was abandoned before completion near the end of the war when it was [...]

Recently, while camping at Lake Siskiyou near Mt Shasta in Northern California, I had the opportunity to get up really close to this cute deer. My wife and I were walking through the campground when we came upon this deer munching on some leaves. I approached very slowly taking photos and the deer watched me [...]

This is a vertical panoramic photo of the Transamerica Pyramid, the most prominent skyscraper in downtown San Francisco. The city is famous for this distinctive building in it’s skyline, the pyramid shape can easily be spotted from even a great distance away.
The building is 853 ft high which, according to Wikipedia, makes it the 100th [...]

I usually wouldn’t take a photo like this with all the cluttered signs, fences, etc. in the way, but in this case I’m glad I did! This is the pedestrian/bike entrance to the Golden Gate Bridge on the San Francisco side. The bridge walkways are closed at 9pm each night and are patrolled by police [...]

I’m only just getting to finish sorting through the photos I took this past Saturday at Lake Del Valle. Here are three more scenic shots I took on my hike around the lake. The first shot is a HDR composite of three images, the others are regular photographs. I used HDR on the first photo [...]

I’ve been looking for a place recently to experiment taking photos of trailing lights from traffic at night. I took this photo last night at the Golden Gate Bridge toll booths (on the San Francisco side of the bridge).
View it large on black (looks much better!)
One of the neat things about these shots is every [...]

I shot this out through the sunroof of my car while driving across the bay bridge into San Francisco yesterday evening, so it is really just a lucky shot. I liked how the perspective turned out, considering it was completely random (I literally just stuck the camera out through the roof, took basic aim and [...]

I captured these scenes while out hiking at Lake Del Valle in Livermore, California on Saturday. Another beautiful California park! It was a hot day for hiking, around 90 degrees but the trails were level and easy so it was actually quite enjoyable. I believe the hike took about 4 hours total, though a considerable [...]

Here is a bright photo I captured earlier this summer in a Sunflower field near Vacaville, California. I find Sunflowers are so bright and happy, they are almost mood lifting. I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend, I hope to get out and find new subjects to photograph this weekend!
If you like Sunflower pictures, here [...]

This is a night shot I took last weekend of the Ferry Building and nearby waterfront in San Francisco. The skyscrapers are part of the downtown financial district. Coit Tower is also visible at the far right of the picture. You can also view a larger version.

This is another photo from my trip into San Francisco last Friday evening. It shows the skyline of North Beach, also known as “Little Italy”, in San Francisco. The large pyramid-shaped building is the Transamerica Building, the tallest building in San Francisco and a key recognizible feature in the San Francisco skyline. The building is [...]

This is another photo taken on my trip from Santa Cruz to San Francisco via the California coastal Highway 1 this past weekend. I captured this photo immediately after sunset, while the sky was still colored with lovely pastels and the light on the land was still very soft. There was also a light [...]

Yesterday I drove the scenic route from Santa Cruz, California up to San Francisco via Highway 1. This coastline is full of beautiful sandy beaches, most of which are California state parks. I captured this photo at one of the few accessible beaches which isn’t a park (and thus doesn’t have an official name, or [...]

I spent some time in San Francisco Friday evening, mostly since I hadn’t been in the city for awhile and was eager to look around. I spent several hours walking around, it was a great chance to take some photos. I’ll post some of the more interesting ones over the next week.

This beautiful landscape photograph was taken during a trip to Gros Morne National Park on the northern peninsula of Newfoundland, Canada in 2002. The photo is of Western Brook Pond, a glacier-carved land-locked fjord set in the Long Range Mountains which is the northern extent of the Appalachian Mountains. The lake itself is approx 16km [...]

This photo is taken at one of my favourite places on earth, a small island called Exploits Island in Notre Dame Bay, just off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The island was once a thriving community, but over the years people resettled to larger communities, and now the place is used entirely for summer cottages [...]

This photo is one of my favourites of the Golden Gate Bridge. I think it does a great job of presenting the beauty of the bridge. This photo is taken at night, long past sunset, and is taken from San Francisco looking towards the North Bay and Marin county. I took this photo in December [...]

I captured photos of these lovely red & yellow liles recently in Sausalito, California along the waterfront. I found the color of these Lilies quite striking. I have photos of a few other beautiful flowers taken in the same area which I’ll post another time, or you can view them now in the photo [...]

Here’s another interesting architectural shot, similar to the photo from the Westfield Shopping Centre. This time it’s a photo of the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington from a trip I took there earlier this spring. The lower part of the needle has a lot of glass, making for nice reflections. I took this looking straight [...]

Welcome! This is the first textual post on my new blog. I’ve been thinking about setting up a site like this for some time, but have never seemed to be able to generate enough content to make it worthwhile. It is my recent renewed interest in digital photography that finally pushed me ahead, so I’ll [...]

Here are some photos I took of a marina in Sausalito, California (just north of San Francisco, directly across the Golden Gate Bridge) at the end of June. It’s a beautiful place, with many beautiful boats!

I happened to pass through the Westfield Shopping Centre in San Francisco on Saturday and took this photo looking up at the many levels of the mall from the bottom floor. Not the most interesting subject, however I liked the perspective and the architecture composition of the photo.

Caught a photo of this beautiful sunset while out for a walk in Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley, California this evening. It’s an amazing park, over 2700 acres in total and set completely in the mountain wilderness. Very quiet and peaceful there.

A pair of horses I saw while out walking near Heather Farms Park in Walnut Creek yesterday.

I captured this photo at the marina in Lewisporte, Newfoundland shortly after a freak summer rainstorm which produced the lovely rainbow.

I took photos of these lovely Water Lily flowers at the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park Botanical Gardens, San Francisco during the summer of 2007. The conservatory is over a hundred years old and contains many typics of exotic and rare plants. If you like flowers and are ever in the area, I highly [...]

I took this photo in Conception Bay, Newfoundland in the summer of 2005. It was a lovely summer evening and the sunset was quite spectacular. The passing sailboat provided the perfect opportunity for a silhouette against the colorful sky.

I took this photo in Conception Bay, Newfoundland in the summer of 2005. It was a lovely summer evening and the sunset was quite spectacular. The passing sailboat provided the perfect opportunity for a silhouette against the colorful sky.
Of note, this photo was lucky enough to be awarded a “photo of the day” award from [...]

I captured this photo at the marina in Lewisporte, Newfoundland shortly after a freak summer rainstorm which produced the lovely rainbow.

A pair of horses I saw while out walking near Heather Farms Park in Walnut Creek yesterday.

Caught a photo of this beautiful sunset while out for a walk in Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley, California this evening. It’s an amazing park, over 2700 acres in total and set completely in the mountain wilderness. Very quiet and peaceful there.

I happened to pass through the Westfield Shopping Centre in San Francisco on Saturday and took this photo looking up at the many levels of the mall from the bottom floor. Not the most interesting subject, however I liked the perspective and the architecture composition of the photo.

Here are some photos I took of a marina in Sausalito, California (just north of San Francisco, directly across the Golden Gate Bridge) at the end of June. It’s a beautiful place, with many beautiful boats!

I captured photos of these lovely red & yellow liles recently in Sausalito, California along the waterfront. I found the color of these Lilies quite striking. I have photos of a few other beautiful flowers taken in the same area which I’ll post another time, or you can view them now in the photo [...]

This photo is one of my favourites of the Golden Gate Bridge. I think it does a great job of presenting the beauty of the bridge. This photo is taken at night, long past sunset, and is taken from San Francisco looking towards the North Bay and Marin county. I took this photo in December [...]

This photo is taken at one of my favourite places on earth, a small island called Exploits Island in Notre Dame Bay, just off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The island was once a thriving community, but over the years people resettled to larger communities, and now the place is used entirely for summer cottages [...]

I spent some time in San Francisco Friday evening, mostly since I hadn’t been in the city for awhile and was eager to look around. I spent several hours walking around, it was a great chance to take some photos. I’ll post some of the more interesting ones over the next week.
I was taking a [...]

This photo was taken back in March on a trip to Disneyland in Anaheim California. Pictured is the Ferris Wheel and Mickey Mouse roller coaster at Paradise Pier. Paradise Pier is located in the Disney’s California Adventure.
California Adventure was built to enhance the experience at Disneyland, and to help the park appeal to a wider [...]

This is another photo taken on my trip from Santa Cruz to San Francisco via the California coastal Highway 1 this past weekend. I captured this photo immediately after sunset, while the sky was still colored with lovely pastels and the light on the land was still very soft. There was also a light [...]

This is a night shot I took last weekend of the Ferry Building and nearby waterfront in San Francisco. The skyscrapers are part of the downtown financial district. Coit Tower is also visible at the far right of the picture. You can also view a larger version.
While I like this picture, the highlights and neon [...]

I shot this out through the sunroof of my car while driving across the bay bridge into San Francisco yesterday evening, so it is really just a lucky shot. I liked how the perspective turned out, considering it was completely random (I literally just stuck the camera out through the roof, took basic aim and [...]

I’m only just getting to finish sorting through the photos I took this past Saturday at Lake Del Valle. Here are three more scenic shots I took on my hike around the lake. The first shot is a HDR composite of three images, the others are regular photographs. I used HDR on the first photo [...]

Recently, while camping at Lake Siskiyou near Mt Shasta in Northern California, I had the opportunity to get up really close to this cute deer. My wife and I were walking through the campground when we came upon this deer munching on some leaves. I approached very slowly taking photos and the deer watched me [...]

The structure was built to defend San Francisco from an attack by sea during World War II but was abandoned before completion near the end of the war when it was [...]

Another beautiful scenic shot from my weekend trip down coastal Highway 1 in Northern California. I’ve admittedly been slow to post photos this week despite having many great photos from my trip down California Highway 1 over the Labour Day weekend. Mostly I’ve been busy with work and other things but honestly it’s also partially due to the fact I took so many photos – it takes a significant amount [...]

I captured this photo of a lovely pink flower in Balboa Park in San Diego earlier this week. I really like the lighting in this photo and the depth of field with the other flower behind it.
I’m not sure what type of flower it is, if anyone recognizes it, please leave a comment and let [...]

Welcome! This is the first textual post on my new blog. I’ve been thinking about setting up a site like this for some time, but have never seemed to be able to generate enough content to make it worthwhile. It is my recent renewed interest in digital photography that finally pushed me ahead, so I’ll [...]

This tunnel is one of several in an abandoned military structure at Hawk’s Hill in the Marin Headlands just above the Golden Gate Bridge. The structure was built to defend San Francisco from an attack by sea during World War II but was abandoned before completion near the end of the war when it was [...]

I’ve admittedly been slow to post photos this week despite having many great photos from my trip down California Highway 1 over the Labour Day weekend. Mostly I’ve been busy with work and other things but honestly it’s also partially due to the fact I took so many photos – it takes a significant amount [...]

Seaport Village, a charming tourist area on the San Diego waterfront with many shops, restaurants, etc for visitors as well as a large park with beautiful flowers…

Close-up photo of a colorful green parrot snacking on an apple at the San Diego zoo.

If you head up Marine Drive in Golden Gate Park, past Crissy field and Fort Mason, you’ll find this beautiful spot with a fantastic view of the Golden Gate Bridge…

These giant redwood trees tower hundreds of feet overhead at the John Muir Woods National Monument and nearly block out all light on the forest floor below…

Photo of a brilliant sunrise over Mount Diablo in Walnut Creek, California.

While walking alone the shoreline trail at Crissy Field, San Francisco, I saw this rough fence post leaning to one side with the Golden Gate bridge in the background…

Skyward photo of a tower of the Bay Bridge connecting San Francisco and Oakland in California.

Washington

Here’s another interesting architectural shot, similar to the photo from the Westfield Shopping Centre. This time it’s a photo of the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington from a trip I took there earlier this spring. The lower part of the needle has a lot of glass, making for nice reflections. I took this looking straight [...]
